Making the Most of a Tattoo Appointment

May 20, 2026

Every tattoo artist has their own slight differences and preferences with how they tattoo, and what they offer and expect. Here are some thoughts on what I think works best.

Before the Appointment

  1. Plan

Take time to think through the idea, placement, size, and style. Good tattoos are worth careful planning.

  1. Consultation

The design, concept, and overall direction are discussed beforehand to make sure everything feels right before moving forward.

  1. Deposit

A deposit secures the appointment date and drawing time. This allows preparation of the custom artwork to begin.

  1. Design Process

Artwork is created based on the consultation and tailored specifically to the project. Every piece is approached carefully and individually.

  1. Final Approval

The design is reviewed before tattooing begins, with time for final adjustments if needed. Comfort and confidence in the piece are important.

  1. Plan for Healing

Keep the days after the appointment low-stress and clean. Proper healing time is important, and activities that may interfere with the healing process should be avoided.

During the Appointment

  1. Comfort Comes First

If discomfort or anxiety ever becomes an issue during the session, communication is encouraged immediately. Tattooing can pause at any time if needed.

  1. Final Decisions Before Tattooing

Any major changes to the concept, placement, size, or direction should be addressed before tattooing begins whenever possible.

  1. Speak Up About Concerns

Questions or concerns regarding placement, sizing, color choices, style, or overall design should be discussed openly prior to starting the tattoo.

  1. Communication During the Session

Feedback is still welcome during the tattooing process. Open communication helps ensure the best possible result.

  1. Pain Management

If pain becomes overwhelming, say something immediately. Breaks can be taken, and longer projects can always be continued during a future session if necessary.

  1. Music & Environment

Music preferences are always welcome, and headphones may be brought for a more comfortable session environment.

  1. Additional Questions or Concerns

Any final thoughts, concerns, sensitivities, or requests should be brought up before tattooing begins to help create a smooth experience.

  1. Photography & Social Media

Photos or videos of the process and completed tattoo may be used for portfolio or social media purposes. Requests for anonymity or privacy are always respected when discussed beforehand.

After the Appointment

  1. Tattoo Aftercare

A dry-heal approach is generally preferred, along with the use of pure bio-active aloe vera immediately after the session. Alternative aftercare preferences should be discussed beforehand if needed.

  1. Keep the Area Clean

Fresh tattoos should be kept away from dirty, dusty, or unsanitary environments during the healing process.

  1. Avoid Pets

Try to avoid close contact with cats, dogs, and other pets for the first several days after tattooing, especially scratches or irritation near the area.

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure

Fresh tattoos should be kept out of direct sunlight during the early healing stages to help protect the skin and preserve the tattoo.

  1. Avoid Water Submersion

Swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, and prolonged soaking should be avoided for several days while the tattoo heals.

  1. Watch for Improper Healing

If anything appears to be healing improperly or signs of infection develop, seek medical attention immediately. Proper healing should always be taken seriously.

  1. Do Not Pick or Scratch

Avoid picking at scabs or scratching the tattoo while healing. Doing so can remove ink and negatively affect the final result.

  1. Choose Aftercare Products Carefully

Use caution when selecting lotions or aftercare products. Heavily scented lotions and petroleum-based products should generally be avoided.

  1. Enjoy the Finished Piece

Once healing is complete, healed photos are always appreciated. Seeing the final result after the healing process is part of the experience.
